Is Quartz better than Granite Stone - Pros & Cons
Quartz and granite are one of the few materials that have stood the test of time. These materials are a synonym for quality and durability that no other material can match. But they have their differences and it is not that easy choosing the right one for you.
If you have been asking yourself the question whether quartz is better than granite stone, we will give you a comparison of these two materials, to help you out choose the one that is better for you.
Quartz is an Engineered Stone
Quartz is a man-made product, made as a combination of natural quartz, resins and polymers. In comparison to that, granite is a natural product without any added materials. These two facts have an impact on almost all the main characteristics of both materials.
Quartz is Non-Porous
Quartz is, unlike granite, a non-porous material that doesn’t absorb liquids and water. Resins are forming a waterproof surface on the top layer, so no liquid can leave a stain. Granite is, on the other hand, a porous material. It can get stained if you don’t remove the spill on time.
Granite is Better at High Temperatures
When it comes to the performance on high temperatures, granite is the one that wins. You can postpone a hot pan on your worktops and granite will handle it. But you shouldn’t do that with quartz- sudden temperature changes can lessen the bond between quartz stone and polymers.
Quartz has a Wider Colour Range
Since quartz is a manufactured stone, during its production the pigments are added to make new colours and patterns. It has a very wide colour palette that includes both neutral and very bright colours. Since granite is a natural stone, its colour palette is limited to the colours found in nature.
The durability of both materials is exceptional and there are no bigger differences between the two. Both will handle high pressure without cracking or breaking. They are both highly resistant to scratches and they will not get scratched when you cut directly on them. Just beware that you can dull your knives by doing so.
The price for both materials is determined by the colour. The rarer the colour, the higher the price. But generally speaking, quartz is more affordable than granite. However, it is not impossible to find a quartz colour that is more expensive than a common granite colour.
Both are very easy to clean with just soap and water. The difference is that you will not have to seal quartz slabs, unlike granite.
To some quartz is a better material than granite and to others, it isn’t. One is certain, quartz can be a great alternative to granite stone- it is just as durable and it is more resistant to staining. The uniqueness of granite’s slabs is undeniable; however, if that’s not important to you, you can choose quartz.
