Quartz vs Corian for Bathroom Work Surfaces

Quartz and Corian are the materials which have gained the most popularity in recent years. Both are manufactured materials with impressive resistance to staining. They are most often used for kitchen worktops, but they can be also successfully installed for bathroom work surfaces. These two materials have some similarities, but also a few differences, so continue reading and find out everything about the comparison of quartz and Corian work surfaces.

1. They are both manufactured

Corian is a brand name that has been producing synthetic solid surfaces. Nowadays, Corian is generically referred to all synthetic solid surfaces, no matter the brand. It is typically formulated with one-third polymers and two-thirds minerals.
Quartz is also a manufactured material, made as a combination of 90% or higher natural quartz and up to 10% resins. They are produced in different ways which has an impact on many characteristics of both materials.

2. Both have a wide colour palette

Since both materials are manufactured, they can have added pigments to change their original colour or add patterns. They can both look like other stones, namely marble and granite. With both, you will have a very wide variety of colours to choose from. Browse our wide range of colours, including quartz marble effect, quartz classic range or quartz premier range.

3. Quartz is more durable

Quartz surfaces have a higher stone percentage, which makes them more durable. Corian surfaces are softer and can get easily dented because of it. They can also scratch easier. However, you shouldn’t have problems with it breaking. With quartz, you will have no problems either with scratching or breaking.

4. They are both non-porous

Non-porous materials are ones that don’t absorb water and liquids. Both materials have resins and polymers that close the fine pores in stones and make them waterproof. Not even nail polishes or hair dyes will be able to leave a permanent stain on your bathroom work surfaces.

5. Corian is more flexible

Corian can be moulded in any shape or with just one large slab. It doesn’t have visible joints which makes one smooth and sleek surface. It can even be curved. Quartz is available in standard rectangular shapes, which are, in the end, the most common.

6. Quartz is more resistant to heat

Corian is a material that burns quite easily. You will have to make sure not to leave hot objects, like hairdryers, directly on it. Quartz is on the other hand, more resistant to heat and it will not get burns that easily. However, it is best to use mats with both, to prevent any staining from happening.

Corian is a nice cheaper alternative to stones, but it is not as high-quality and durable as them. Investing in quartz work surfaces will pay off eventually because they will last much longer than Corian. They are more durable and hence, longer-lasting. They will also resist everyday impacts better.
